Tell us about your practice.
My practice is divided pretty equally into commercial real estate and development, business and joint venture planning (usually but not always with a commercial real estate spin), and business divorce work (usually working in tandem with one of our business litigators like John Golwen or Brook Lathram).
What are some trends you are seeing related to the legal industry or in the industry in which you practice?
In the area of commercial real estate (and I think business transactions generally), there’s a lot of liquidity in the market fueled in no small measure by the extremely low interest rate environment. All that cash is competing for the same deals and chasing yield, which tends to bid up asset prices. Increasing asset prices fueled by liquidity and government policies designed to suppress interest rates seems sort of like “déjà vu all over again.” Let’s hope this exuberance is not of the irrational variety.
What is the most fulfilling part of your job?
We are all blessed to be able to work every day with bright, ethical, and motivated colleagues. In addition, over time, we have a great deal of control over what kind of practice we have, what kind of clients we work with, and how we spend our time each day. Most people don’t have that kind of control over their professional lives, and we should never take it for granted.
