In connection with his presentation at the Paul J. Hartman State & Local Tax Forum, Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Steve Jasper co-authored an article outlining some of the more significant locally imposed taxes that could cause unexpected issues for businesses entering a new jurisdiction. Steve co-authored the article with his fellow co-panelists from the Forum, including: attorney Mitchell A. Newmark with Morrison & Foerster LLP; attorney Carley A. Roberts with Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP; and attorney Breen M. Schiller with Horwood Marcus & Berk Chtd. The authors analyzed several specific local taxes that businesses should be aware of when expanding to new geographical areas, including:

  • Personal Property Lease Transaction Tax in Chicago
  • A variety of new taxes targeting the business community in San Francisco
  • Commercial Rent Tax in New York City
  • Payroll Tax in Jersey City, New Jersey
  • Local Property Tax in New Jersey
  • Income Tax Credits in New Jersey
  • Business Tax in Tennessee
