Bass, Berry & Sims’ director of professional development, Kayla Broom, and chief attorney talent officer, Devin Lintzenich, co-authored an article for ALM / Law.com discussing the value of professional development (PD) programs in retaining talent, developing young lawyers, and growing and serving clientele.

An effective professional development strategy should align with an overall firm strategy and have its own strategic goals surrounding measurable outcomes that result from the efforts. Bass, Berry & Sims is not only focused on associate professional development initiatives, but also initiatives for partners to continue refining skills surrounding client expectations, business development, collaboration and managing teams.

Professional development goals and metrics are also based around vital skills and abilities that all attorneys at the firm should exhibit proficiency in at specific stages of their career. Kayla and Devin discuss how day-to-day initiatives – such as integration coaching, annual growth goals, and matter-level support – help to establish clear expectations and allow for the implementation of programs and processes that reinforce them.

“Overall, when firms invest in PD, the result is a culture of continuous growth that enhances client service, strengthens teams and benefits individuals,” said the authors. “It’s this kind of culture where everyone can adapt and thrive.”
