As part of the 2022 Best of the Bar program, the Memphis Business Journal published a profile on each winner. When asked about an important moment from his career that shaped him as a lawyer, John said:
I had the opportunity from the first year of my practice 32 years ago to try cases in state, federal, and arbitration forums, and that entire collective experience has shaped my career. I have learned greatly from trying cases adverse to some very talented lawyers and alongside some very fine colleagues. I have tried to adopt and incorporate skills I was able to learn from them.
However, 12 years ago I mediated my first case as the mediator and helped the parties and their counsel resolve a very contentious lawsuit. Since then, I have tried to draw on my litigation experience to help others resolve their disputes as a mediator, and that service has become a most fulfilling aspect of my work.
