Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Lisa Rivera commented on data breaches in the healthcare industry in an article examining the $115 million Anthem settlement related to a 2015 data breach. “Health-care data is particularly vulnerable because it ordinarily includes much more detailed personal information, which may remain unchanged and therefore vulnerable at some future date, unlike a credit card or account number that can be canceled or changed,” Lisa said. In order to be good stewards of patient data, “health-care companies need to continuously review and update their system protections, including training, monitoring, testing, and devoting sufficient resources for their information security,” Lisa added.
