Nashville, Tenn. (April 29, 2016) – Bass, Berry & Sims PLC is pleased to announce that W. Brantley Phillips, Jr. has been appointed to serve as chair of the firm’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practice Group. In this role, Phillips will have responsibility for more than 100 attorneys and staff working in Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis and Washington, D.C. Additionally, Phillips will continue to serve in his role as a senior member on the firm’s seven-person Executive Committee through 2016.

“Brant is an accomplished litigator with a well-deserved reputation for excellent client service and hard work,” said Todd Rolapp, managing partner of Bass, Berry & Sims. “Brant is the right person, at the right time, with the right vision to lead the Litigation group, and I look forward to working with him in executing his vision.”

Since joining the firm in 1998, Phillips has built a long track record of success in high-stakes litigation and regulatory matters across a broad range of industries. In his previous role as co-chair of the firm’s Securities & Shareholder Litigation Practice Group, Phillips successfully represented many of the firm’s 35 public company clients in disputes relating to corporate transactions valued at more than $45 billion, as well as dozens of class actions related to sub-prime structured investment products. Drawing on his background in public policy, Phillips also routinely assists clients in high-profile proceedings before government boards and commissions, and, most recently, he was named by Best Lawyers in America® as the 2016 Administrative / Regulatory Law “Lawyer of the Year” in Nashville. His work in the courtroom also has been recognized by Best Lawyers, as well as Mid-South Super Lawyers and Benchmark Litigation. Phillips is a Fellow of the Nashville Bar Foundation and a member of the current class of Leadership Tennessee. He graduated with honors from Washington & Lee University School of Law, where he was a senior editor of the Law Review, and earned master’s and undergraduate degrees from Duke University and Birmingham-Southern College, respectively.

The announcement of Phillips new role was well-received by legal and business leaders alike.

“Brant is a formidable opponent and lawyer’s lawyer,” said Jerry Martin, former U.S. Attorney and partner at Barrett Johnston Martin & Garrison. “Brant brings intelligence, drive and integrity to his work, and that’s clear whether he sits on your side or across the table.”

“We rely on Brant and his firm to assist us with matters of the highest importance on a regular basis,” said Christopher A. Holden, CEO of Nashville-based AmSurg Corp., “and his friends at AmSurg wish him well as he takes on this new challenge.” Phillips recently led a team that obtained a multimillion dollar award for AmSurg in a California arbitration.

“I am honored to have this opportunity,” Phillips said, “and I look forward to working with my talented colleagues to advance our clients’ best interests and resolve their critical disputes both here and abroad with the skill, determination and professionalism that have been identified with this firm for nearly 100 years.”
