Fourth Lateral Hire in Under a Year Bolsters Firm’s Growth in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., January 14, 2025 – Bass, Berry & Sims is pleased to announce James Parkinson, a seasoned compliance and government investigations attorney with extensive experience in multi-jurisdictional, anti-corruption and regulatory matters, has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as a member.

Parkinson focuses his practice on counseling businesses and individuals in regulatory compliance and government investigations, with an emphasis on multi-jurisdictional and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) matters. He has significant experience navigating cross-border matters and representing clients in criminal and civil enforcement actions involving the FCPA, extradition, securities fraud, insider trading, false statements, and environmental issues.

Parkinson also counsels clients with global business operations and partnerships related to U.S. sanctions regimes administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), as well as anti-money laundering (AML) regulations under the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). His work involves compliance advisory and internal and governmental investigations related to global business operations, including in the United Kingdom, India, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Italy, Egypt, Korea, and more.

Parkinson’s clients include U.S. and non-U.S. entities across a range of sectors, such as banking, fintech, manufacturing, retail and food services, as well as senior executives facing civil and criminal investigation.

A recognized thought leader in international law, Parkinson frequently speaks on financial crime and anti-corruption. He has served as a guest lecturer for international law schools. He is a member of the U.K.’s Fraud Lawyers Association, and the Anti-Corruption Committees of the American and International Bar Associations. In a prior role at a law firm, Parkinson served as head of the London office.

Parkinson holds a law degree from the American University Washington College of Law (1999), a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania (1994), and an undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College (1990).
