Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Anna Grizzle commented on the high numbers of nurses excluded from Medicare and Medicaid in an article for BNA’s Health Law Resource Center. An analysis conducted by Bloomberg BNA revealed that in 2016 more than 30,000 nurses were excluded from Medicare and Medicaid compared with more than 1,500 doctors. According to Anna, “Nurses account for more exclusions than physicians because of the higher number of nurses licensed in the U.S. compared to physicians.”

“The potential bases for OIG exclusion are numerous, and many providers do not fully appreciate the potential threat of exclusion when resolving matters such as a licensure issue,” Anna further stated.
