Bass, Berry & Sims served as co-counsel to Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (MLH) in its efforts to obtain a Certificate of Need (CON) to initiate radiation therapy at its hospital campus located in Germantown, Tennessee. Despite opposition from two hospital systems in the Memphis-area, state regulators voted to approve the project by a 2-to-1 margin. MLH will deliver radiation therapy in Germantown using a state-of-the-art MRI-guided linear accelerator, which will be the first of its kind in Tennessee and one of only 10 in the United States. “We’re incredibly excited to receive this approval as we continue our work to create a comprehensive cancer program focused on providing expert cancer care across all of the communities we serve,” said MLH President & CEO Michael Ugwueke. This approval marks an important milestone as MLH works to create the new Methodist Cancer Institute in partnership with University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Founded 100 years ago, MLH is one of the leading healthcare providers in the Mid-South region with nearly 2.2 million patient encounters in 2018. With seven hospitals, multiple outpatient and diagnostic centers, and a growing network of physician practices, MLH offers a comprehensive continuum of care and is a nationally recognized leader is multiple specialties, including cardiology, neurology and organ transplants.
