For over a decade, Bass Berry & Sims attorneys have chaired the Healthcare Law & Compliance Institute sponsored by the International Practice Management Institute (IPMI). The Institute brings together healthcare general counsel and compliance officers of providers throughout the United States for robust discussions of the most challenging compliance and enforcement issues facing the healthcare industry.

Matt Curley and Anna Grizzle most recently chaired the IPMI Institute held in February in New Orleans. In addition to chairing the conference, Matt and Anna also participated in various panel discussions. The Bass Berry & Sims team also included Nesrin Tift and Molly Ruberg.

Matt Curley participated in a panel discussion titled “Critical Insights, Updates and Considerations in the Healthcare Law Landscape,” in which the panelists covered regulatory, compliance and enforcement developments facing the healthcare industry stemming from the change in administration in Washington D.C.  Matt also moderated the panel discussion titled “How Your Culture Can Help (or Hinder) Your Response to Crisis,” and was joined by Justin Pitt (Community Health Systems) and Andy Wampler (Ballad Health). This panel discussed the growing challenges faced by healthcare providers, including crises such as pandemics, cyber-attacks, and natural disasters, and how an organization’s culture might impact and guide their response to such crises.

Anna Grizzle led a panel titled “Evaluating Compliance Program Effectiveness” with panelists Monica Raines (Addus Homecare) and LeToia Crozier (Mosaic Health). This panel focused on recent compliance guidance from the Department of Justice and the Office of Inspector General highlighting the need for effective programs to prevent, detect, and respond to legal violations in healthcare organizations. This session focused on best practices for evaluating and improving compliance programs, incorporating new issues like ephemeral messaging and artificial intelligence.
