Bass, Berry & Sims members Brian Roark and Denise Barnes will serve as panelists at the American Bar Association’s Qui Tam & Civil False Claims and Healthcare Fraud Institute 2026.

Brian Roark will speak on the panel “Healthcare Fraud Enforcement Overview” on Wednesday, May 27. The session will examine key trends driving False Claims Act enforcement in the healthcare industry. Drawing on the experience of former federal prosecutors now in private practice, the discussion will cover developments in managed care, durable medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and research, as well as perspectives from both government and defense counsel.

The panel will be moderated by Lisa Noller (Foley & Lardner LLP, Chicago, IL) and will include panelists Jason Christ (Epstein Becker Green, Washington, DC), Amy Easton (Phillips & Cohen, Washington, DC), and Colin Huntley (Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, Washington, DC).

Denise Barnes will speak on the panel “Ethical Considerations in False Claims Act Cases for Relator, Defense and Government Counsel” on Thursday, May 28. The session will explore ethical issues that frequently arise in False Claims Act investigations, litigation, and trial proceedings, including defense counsel obligations, evidence collection, communications with represented parties, and ethical standards applicable to government attorneys.

The panel will be moderated by Habib Ilahi (Fluet, Tysons, VA) and will include panelists Jacklyn DeMar (The Anti-Fraud Coalition, Washington, DC) and Candice Deisher (Virginia Attorney General’s Office, Richmond, VA).

Hosted by the American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section and Health Law Section, the institute will take place May 27–28, 2026, at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Washington, D.C.
