Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Cindy Reisz was interviewed on the American Health Law Association (AHLA) Speaking of Law podcast as part of the special series, Conversations with AHLA Leaders, featuring AHLA leaders who discuss key moments in their careers, current and future trends in health law, and AHLA’s role in their professional development. Cindy is president-elect of AHLA and will assume the role of president on July 1, 2021. For this podcast episode, Cindy was interviewed by Chip Hutzler, Director at Horne LLP.

Cindy discussed her early legal career as a corporate attorney and how she transitioned to a focus on healthcare. She also speculated about the future of healthcare, building on the foundation set by population health management companies of the past that will include “more sophisticated technology and artificial intelligence and the ability to really gather data, synthesize it, understand it, and make decisions about how to provide healthcare to our population and improve their care…we have evolved as an industry to where we are much more sophisticated … and the results are more tangible.” She continued saying, “I feel very positive and excited about the direction that healthcare is going. I truly think that it will make a difference in how patients are treated and the coordinated way patients are treated.”

When asked about what her plaque will say when she is inducted as a “rockstar” into the “Health Lawyer Hall of Fame” one day, Cindy quoted Bono, the ultimate rockstar, who said: “As a rockstar, I have two instincts: I want to have fun and I want to change the world. I have a chance to do both.” Without drawing a direct comparison to the U2 frontman, Cindy said she has the same two instincts, “I am no Bono! But I have fun practicing healthcare law. I really do enjoy it. It’s hard but I love it. And I like to think I’ve changed a small part of the world by guiding the clients that I do work with and by the efforts I’ve made in terms of what AHLA has been involved in doing in terms of educating and serving as a resource to the health law community.”
