Nashville, Tenn., (October 30, 2012) – Bass, Berry & Sims PLC is pleased to announce the return of Matthew M. Curley from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee, as a partner in the firm’s Compliance and Government Investigations Practice Group.
During 2011 and 2012, Curley served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Chief of the Office’s Civil Division. While serving as Civil Chief, Curley was responsible for supervising and coordinating the Office’s affirmative civil enforcement efforts, which focused on healthcare fraud actions arising under the False Claims Act. Curley represented the United States and its agencies in affirmative civil enforcement matters and participated in the successful resolution of a number of False Claims Act cases.
“Prior to his service at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Matt was an integral part of our litigation group and handled some of the most challenging matters for clients of the firm,” said Managing Partner Keith Simmons. “When combined with his talents as a litigator, Matt’s experience in overseeing the U.S. Attorney’s civil enforcement efforts will be a significant asset to our healthcare clients in navigating governmental inquiries and investigations.”
Curley’s return further bolsters the firm’s Compliance and Governmental Investigations Practice Group. Within the past two years, the firm has added Eli Richardson, the former Criminal Chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee, and John Kelly, former Assistant Chief for Health Care Fraud in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Kelly’s arrival coincided with the opening of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, where he serves as Managing Partner.

During his previous tenure at the firm, Curley represented healthcare providers in connection with internal investigations regarding regulatory and compliance issues, investigations conducted by the Office of Inspector General and U.S. Department of Justice, and in related federal criminal and civil proceedings.
Along with Brian Roark, who leads the firm’s Healthcare Fraud and Abuse practice group, Curley serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University School of Law, teaching Healthcare Fraud and Abuse.
After graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Law, Curley served as a law clerk for Judge Michael S. Kanne of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Judge Royce C. Lamberth of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
