Washington, D.C., (May 21, 2024) – Bass, Berry & Sims is pleased to announce that Sylvia Yi has rejoined the firm as counsel in its Government Contracts Practice in Washington, D.C. Yi’s addition follows the announcement last week that former federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice Denise Barnes had joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

Yi rejoins after serving as an in-house senior attorney with IBM and focuses her practice on matters related to government contracting. Yi is part of the firm’s Government Contracts Practice, which is nationally ranked by Chambers USA and is known for guiding companies through bid protests, investigations, M&A transactions, counseling and a full spectrum of other issues. The practice represents a “who’s who” of government contractors around the country.

“As we continue to focus on strategic growth in our D.C. office, we are thrilled to welcome Sylvia and her experience and acumen in the government contracts space for our clients in Washington and around the country,” said Todd Overman, managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office and chair of the Government Contracts Practice Group. “We are grateful for the opportunity to continue growing our bench of talented attorneys in such a competitive market and we look forward to again benefiting from the invaluable contributions Sylvia makes for our clients and firm.”

Yi represents businesses across a broad range of sectors as they move through the contracting process with federal, state and local governments, and when they engage in international transactions. She counsels public and private companies on day to day compliance challenges and has a particular focus on mergers & acquisitions involving government contractors. Yi is returning to the firm after an in-house role as a senior attorney on IBM’s U.S. Public Sector legal team, where she supported the company’s federal government business.

An active leader in government contracts law, Yi regularly speaks at industry conferences and contributes to the firm’s GovCon & Trade Blog, where she provides insight on the demanding and ever-changing regulatory environment. She is active with the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section of Public Contract Law, where she previously held roles as executive mentee to the section chair, vice chair of the Diversity Committee and vice chair of the Young Lawyers Committee.

“It was a natural decision to return to where I started my career,” Yi said. “I’m excited to be back with our fantastic Government Contracts and International Trade team with the added benefit of a valuable in-house perspective.”

Yi earned a law degree from The George Washington University Law School (2015) and an undergraduate degree in political science from George Mason University (2012).
