Bass, Berry & Sims attorney David Thornton commented on how the current 2020 environment, including the COVID-19 pandemic, may impact employee benefit plans for the coming year.

“With 2020 being a lower-cost year overall as patients delay elective surgeries, 2021 ‘could be a much more expensive year’ for healthcare as hospitals see more business,” said David.

Many employers are also switching medical plan administrators for 2021, however that may be independent of the pandemic. “Employers switch administrators for a number of reasons, including cost, service quality and geographical coverage,” noted David.
