Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Margaret Dodson was interviewed on the Undisclosed: Toward Justice podcast to provide an update on the Greg Lance case, a case that Bass, Berry & Sims has been involved with in a pro bono capacity since 2019. Greg was convicted of the 1998 double murder of a couple in Putnam County, Tennessee, and has been incarcerated and fighting for his release ever since. Greg’s case was the subject of season 2 of Undisclosed that aired several years ago and was also profiled on the September 30, 2021, episode of “True Crime Story: It Couldn’t Happen Here” on SundanceTV.
Margaret provided updates on the case related to Greg’s petition for a new trial based on newly discovered evidence, including the testimony of five new witnesses that testified about another individual’s repeated confessions to the crime, and new DNA evidence excluding Greg from DNA found on the weapon. Margaret led Greg’s legal team in presenting this new evidence at a hearing in July 2024. Despite this new evidence of Greg’s innocence, the trial court judge denied the petition for a new trial. Greg’s team has appealed that decision, and in November 2025, Margaret presented argument to the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, arguing, in part, that the trial court applied the wrong standard in reaching its decision and under the proper standard, Greg is entitled to relief. In discussing the future of the case, Margaret said she was hopeful that Tennessee’s appellate court corrects the errors of the trial court and highlighted the “incredible evidence of innocence” in Greg’s petition.
