On October 14, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit overturned the conviction of former Pilot Flying J vice president Scott Wombold in a reversal of a February 2018 verdict that made national headlines. Bass, Berry & Sims attorneys John Kelly and David Esquivel led the team of attorneys representing Wombold in this case.
The court ruled in a two-judges-to-one decision to strike down the conviction of Wombold, as well as convictions of the former Pilot Flying J president and a former staffer in the case of United States v. Mark Hazelwood, et al. The matter has been remanded to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at a date to be determined.
