Buddy McDaniel joined Bass, Berry & Sims PLC in September 2006 as an associate in the firm's Commercial Transactions and Real Estate Practice. Buddy's practice includes the representation of financial institutions in a variety of commercial lending matters, and he has extensive experience in commercial loan workouts. He also works on matters related to the acquisition, disposition, and financing of commercial real estate projects, including retail, multi-family housing, office building, raw land, and mixed use developments. Buddy has also represented clients in the acquisition and disposition of closely held businesses.

Real Estate Capital Markets:  Buddy has experience working with REITs in the acquisition and disposition of properties and in the negotiation of credit facilities with institutional lenders for the purchase and financing of those properties.

Financial Transactions:  Buddy represents local, regional, and national borrowers and lenders in a variety of real estate and asset based loan transactions.

Distressed Real Estate and Loan Restructures:  Buddy has worked extensively on matters involving the representation of lenders, borrowers and investors in loan purchases and sales, judicial and non-judicial foreclosures, debt restructures, the acquisition or disposition of bank owned property in the context of bankruptcies and receiverships.

Representative Matters Include:
  • Represented a business development corporation in the negotiation and closing of syndicated credit facility with institutional lenders. 
  • Represented a publicly traded REIT in the acquisition of retail centers in Texas and Arizona. 
  • Represented a publicly traded REIT in the acquisition, disposition, and financing of multi-family projects located in Tennessee, Florida and Texas. 
  • Represented a non-traded REIT in the financing of projects located in Texas and Georgia. 
  • Represented an institutional lender in the post-foreclosure disposition of a Texas retail center. 
  • Represented an investor in the acquisition of a hotel loan in the context of a borrower bankruptcy. 
  • Represented an institutional lender in the disposition of nine Tennessee multi-family complexes in the context of a receivership and in connection with a Fannie Mae loan participation. 
  • Represented an institutional lender in the disposition of a North Carolina resort property acquired by deed-in-lieu in the context of a borrower bankruptcy. 
  • Represented a national real estate investment company in the workout of purchased distressed real estate loans and acquisition of properties in the context of the same. 
  • Represented an institutional lender in a variety of loan restructures and loan sales related to commercial real estate loans, bank holding company loans, mortgage warehouse lines of credit, and other secured credit facilities.

Buddy graduated from Rhodes College with a B.A. degree in history. Upon graduation, Buddy taught eleventh grade American history before attending law school. Buddy received his law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2006. While in law school, he was a symposium editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment and Technology Law, a member of the Vanderbilt Trial Advocacy Society and the Mock Trial Competition. He received Vanderbilt Scholastic Excellence Awards in Constitutional Law II and Current Constitutional Issues.

Buddy is a member of the Urban Land Institute and has served on the Executive Committee for the Young Leaders Division of the ULI in Memphis. He is a current member of the Board of Directors for Service Over Self, Inc. Buddy and his wife, Katie, have two daughters, Emma Kate and Caroline. In his spare time, Buddy enjoys hunting, fishing, and running.
