As the heated Presidential election draws toward a close over the next 2 1/2 weeks, cybercriminals are looking to take advantage of the nation’s heightened interest in the outcome. There has been a noticeable increase of late in election-themed emails and other online lures intended to distribute malware and spam. One recent example making the rounds is a fake news article purporting to show a photo of a political rally where Donald Trump has collapsed from a heart attack. By clicking on the hoax article, the enticed user either downloads malware or is linked to a malicious site. Be extra cautious during the remainder of the election season about sites you visit and actions you take online to mitigate the threat from election-related criminal activities. Cybercriminals are using this election season as a backdrop for campaigns with a decidedly malicious purpose – don’t end up an unwitting attendee at their convention.
