Leigh Walton Accepts Invitation to Join American Bar Foundation


Nashville, Tenn., September 10, 2009 – Leigh Walton, member at Bass, Berry & Sims PLC, has accepted an invitation to become a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (ABF), a select group of U.S. and international legal professionals who support the work of the ABF, the premier socio-legal research institute in the country.

Fellows to the ABF are recognized by their peers for this honor by establishing themselves as leaders in the legal community and by contributing significantly to the legal profession. One third of one percent of attorneys in each state is honored by admission to the Fellows. Walton joins Bass, Berry & Sims PLC Members Lee Barfield and Julie Jones in this distinction.

Walton is chair of the Committee on Mergers and Acquisitions of the American Bar Association’s Section of Business Law, co-chair of the Transactions Affinity Group of the American Health Lawyers Association’s Business Law and Governance Practice Group, and is on the Editorial Board on the ABA’s Task Force on Acquisition of Public Companies and the Board of Directors of the Nashville Health Care Council. She co-chairs the firm’s Healthcare Practice Group and is also active in corporate and securities law matters. Her work with public companies includes securities, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance matters. For healthcare clients, she assists in the acquisition of hospital systems, structures hospital syndications and joint ventures and coordinates financing transactions.

Walton lectures annually at the ABA's National Institute on Negotiating Business Acquisitions, the Northwestern University School of Law's Securities Regulation Institute, Penn State’s Corporate, Securities and Related Aspects of Mergers and Acquisitions, and the ABA’s Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law and participates regularly in other seminars and programs on healthcare, corporate and securities law matters. She also regularly participates in M&A presentations at Stanford, Harvard and Columbia Law Schools.

Walton is listed in The International Who's Who of Corporate Governance Lawyers, The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, Who's Who in American Law, Mid-South Super Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America®, Lawdragon 500, Lawdragon 3000 Leading Lawyers in America, Lawdragon 500 Dealmakers and Chambers USA. Walton received a B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School, where she was a member of Order of the Coif and the National Moot Court Team.
