Jim Tate joined Bass, Berry & Sims in 1980 and became a member of the firm in 1986. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1976 and in 1980 received the J. D. degree from Vanderbilt Law School, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif. Jim is listed in The Best Lawyers in America®, has been named one of Tennessee's leading real estate lawyers by Chambers USA and serves as counsel to the board of trust of a Nashville independent school.
Jim practices primarily in the areas of banking and commercial lending, secured transactions, real estate, creditors' rights and general commercial law. Since joining the firm, Jim has devoted the majority of his professional time to the negotiation and documentation of a variety of corporate financing, commercial lending and real estate transactions including revolving credit and term loan facilities, asset-based financings, construction loans, long-term real estate loans and real estate development projects. A private pilot, he also enjoys working with clients in matters relating to the ownership, financing and operation of aircraft.

- Agent banks and lenders in revolving credit and term loan facilities to a variety of healthcare and healthcare-related companies, both public and private.
- The borrowers in a number of large corporate financings, including syndicated senior revolving credit and term loan facilities, both secured and unsecured, securitized real estate financings, sale/leasebacks and other specialized financings.
- The owner of a high-rise office tower in connection with the sale of the building.
- An apparel company in connection with site selection, acquisition and development of property for a distribution center facility.
- A hospital company in connection with site acquisitions, real property dispositions and the development of medical office building projects.
- Developers in a variety of real estate projects including a theater and entertainment center, multi-tenant office and retail projects, residential subdivisions, planned unit developments and office and residential condominiums.
