John is an attorney at Bass, Berry & Sims PLC, focusing his practice on securities litigation and arbitration, contract disputes, and general business litigation.

Prior to joining the firm, John gained extensive experience litigating a wide range of cases in both Tennessee and Mississippi for Glankler Brown, PLLC in Memphis and Freeland Shull, PLLC in Oxford, Mississippi. He represented a variety of businesses, from small firms to Fortune 500 companies, in diverse business and contract litigation matters as well as insurance coverage and defense disputes. John has appeared in and tried cases in Mississippi and Tennessee. From 2008 until 2010, he gained direct, significant experience in the securities industry, working as a registered securities broker for CAC Financial Partners, LLC, a boutique investment firm. John is licensed to practice before all state and federal courts in both Tennessee and Mississippi.

Representative matters include:
  • Defense of a large broker-dealer in bond fund litigation, involving a significant number of arbitration claims in several states;
  • Obtained significant settlement on behalf of India-based textile manufacturer in UCC lawsuit with former customer;
  • Defense of national life insurance company in coverage disputes with former policyholders;
  • Obtained significant settlement for minority shareholder in regional security services firm in shareholder lawsuit with majority shareholder;
  • Defense of French industrial/chemical company in breach of contract/successor liability lawsuit;
  • Obtained dismissal of breach of contract/fraud suit by former mortgage loan broker on behalf of national securities firm;
  • Obtained favorable settlement for international REIT in commercial lease dispute with former industrial tenant;
  • Obtained temporary restraining order and significant settlement for majority shareholder of national pneumatic tool supplier against former shareholders in unfair competition/fraud lawsuit;
  • Representation of clients in a variety of general business disputes.

John is a contributing blogger to Thomson Reuters' News & Insight Securities Law blog.

During law school at the University of Mississippi, John served as associate articles editor for the Mississippi Law Journal and as a member of the National Moot Court Team. He published two articles in the Mississippi Law Journal and won the 2003 Oral Advocacy Competition. During the fall semester of 2001, John attended the University of Tulsa’s International and Comparative Law Center in London, England, an ABA accredited International Law program taught by law professors from the United Kingdom and continental Europe.
