James Gooch has practiced with Bass, Berry & Sims since 1972, following completion of four years of military service in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.  He earned both LL.B. and B.A. degrees from Vanderbilt University and an LL.M. (taxation) from New York University.  Mr. Gooch was named to Phi Beta Kappa, to the Order of the Coif and was case editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review .  Mr. Gooch is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a trustee and former president of the Southern Federal Tax Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, former president of the Tennessee Federal Tax Institute and former chairman of the Tennessee Bar Association Tax Section.  Mr. Gooch has been listed for more than twenty years in The Best Lawyers in America® and as one of the best Trust & Estates lawyers in the state by Business Tennessee magazine since 2004. For the past four years, Mr. Gooch has been listed in Nashville Business Journal's Best of the Bar, a distinction earned exclusively by nominations from other attorneys.  He is also listed in the Lawdragon 500 and Lawdragon 3000 Leading Lawyers in America .
