Howard Lamar has been a Member of the firm since 1996. He counsels a variety of public and private companies, individuals and private equity and ventrue capital investors. As a member of the firm's Corporate and Securities Practice, he advises clients in established entities, both public and private, as well as early stage growth companies. Howard's practice focuses on handling complex transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions for public and private companies, public and private offerings on behalf of issuers and investment banking firms and venture capital financing (equity and senior and subordinated debt) for venture funds and issuers (including venture capital partnership formation). Howard also counsels companies on a variety of other corporate and securities matters, including corporate governance, public company disclosure matters, strategic analysis and start-up concerns.
Howard graduated from Vanderbilt University where he received his B.A. in 1983. He received his juris doctor degree from Vanderbilt in 1989 and was elected to The Order of the Coif. Prior to attending law school, Howard spent three years with Bank of America (formerly, and during the time he was there, NCNB) where he was a corporate lending officer in NCNB's Corporate and International Banking Group.
Howard is a member of the American and Nashville Bar Associations. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America®, named one of Tennessee's leading corporate lawyers by Chambers USA, was designated one of the "Best Lawyers in Nashville" by Nashville Post magazine, and has been named one of the "Best 101 Lawyers in the State of Tennessee" (January 2004) and one of the "Best 150 Lawyers in the State of Tennessee" (January 2006 and January 2007), each by Business Tennessee magazine. He is also listed in the Lawdragon 3000 .
Howard currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center Management Corporation, the Vanderbilt University Alumni Association Board of Directors and as a member of the Executive Committee of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC. He previously served as chairman of the Board of Trust of the Tennessee Repertory Theater, as a director of Outlook Nashville, a non-profit agency serving children and adults with severe mental and physical handicaps, and on the session of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Howard is an Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church and a member of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. He is married to Elizabeth and has three sons, Hall, Warner and Trent.
