Mr. Masterson is a member in the firm's Nashville office and serves as the chair of the Public Finance Practice Area.  He concentrates his practice in financings for 501(c)(3) organizations, federal income tax issues relating to municipal bonds and property tax abatement transactions.  Mr. Masterson's practice also includes public utility regulatory work and high yield corporate notes.  He joined the firm in 1978 and practiced for four years as a general tax lawyer and for two years as a corporate and securities lawyer before joining the Public Finance Practice Area.  Mr. Masterson graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1975 and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 1978, where he was note and comment editor of the North Carolina Law Review .  He is listed in  Best Lawyers®.  Mr. Masterson is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers and has served as a panelist at several of the association's Bond Attorneys' Workshops.

His public finance experience includes the following:
  • Serving as bond counsel, underwriter's counsel, issuer's counsel, conduit borrower's counsel or letter of credit bank's counsel for a wide variety of governmental purpose, qualified 501(c)(3), exempt facility  and qualified small issue bond issues, with principal amounts ranging from $500,000 to $119,000,000.
  • Negotiation and implementation of property tax abatement transactions with Tennessee counties and cities for numerous Fortune 500 and privately held companies.
