The African-American Affinity Group and its membership actively participate in a number programs, activities, sponsorships, organizations, and community service that benefit the African-American community.
Programs and Activities
- In February 2009, members of 3AG served as judges for the mock trial competition sponsored by Southern Regional Black Law Students Association in Nashville and for the Davidson County High School Mock Trial Tournament.
- In November, 2008, 3AG organized and held its inaugural Salute to African-American Executives Luncheon at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The luncheon is a networking event held in honor of African-American executives and influential leaders in Nashville and the surrounding communities. The featured speaker was Teri Plummer McClure, senior vice president and general counsel for UPS. The program ended with a $5,000 scholarship donation to Fisk University.
- In May 2008, 3AG held its first Mentor Retreat, a one-day and half program held in Nashville. The retreat focused on discussions regarding strategies for achieving success within your legal career, as well as, the opportunities and challenges that exist for minority attorneys within a corporate law firm.
- In 2006, members of 3AG assisted the Vanderbilt Black Law Student Association’s Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial team.
- 3AG members help organize and participate in "Law Firm: Soup to Nuts" and "Firm Handshakes and Lasting Impressions: A Networking and Interviewing Seminar."
- 3AG assists the firm with incorporating events of interest to African-American summer associates within its summer program, including: a concert featuring recording artists Fantasia and Kem, a performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, a comedy show featuring Rickey Smiley, and an Evening with Maya Angelou.
Sponsorships
- In 2007, the firm sponsored the Vanderbilt Law School Trailblazer Awards which were presented to the first two black law students, E. Melvin Porter, Sr. and Frederick Taylor Work
- In addition to the firm being a financial contributor, 3AG members have planned the Music City Minority Clerk Mixer (MC² Mixer) held in the summer for minority law students clerking in Nashville.
- The firm regularly sponsors tables at the YMCA Black Achievers banquet, Urban League luncheon and the Napier Looby Foundation banquet.
Organizations
- 3AG attorneys hold membership and/or officer positions within the following organizations: Tennessee Alliance for Black Lawyers, Napier-Looby Bar Association, Minority Opportunities Committee of the Nashville Bar Association, Ben F. Jones National Bar Association, Memphis Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Kentucky Bar Association, Lawyers’ Association for Women, and the American Bar Association.
