Drew Goddard is head of Bass, Berry & Sims' Environmental Practice Area and chair of the firm's Library and Technology Committee.  He graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Engineering in 1975, Tau Beta Pi, and from Duke University School of Law in 1978, Order of the Coif.  He joined Bass, Berry& Sims in 1978 and has practiced environmental law for over 20 years.  Drew is a former chair of the Environmental Section of the Tennessee Bar Association.  He has served on external steering committees of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, is editor of the Tennessee Environmental Law Letter and taught an environmental law course at Vanderbilt University School of Law for 13 years.   He has served for several years on the various environmental committees and subcommittees of the Tennessee Association of Business and has lectured extensively on environmental law issues.  In 2005, Governor Phil Bredesen appointed him as the chair of the Tennessee Heritage Conservation Trust Fund Board.  Drew has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® since 1991 and has been named one of the best environmental lawyers in the state by Business Tennessee magazine for the past four years.

His experience includes the following:
  • Successfully negotiated numerous enforcement & consent orders with U.S. EPA, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and other environmental agencies.
  • Successfully negotiated numerous remediation & consent orders with U.S. EPA, the Tennessee Department of Environment Conservation and other environmental agencies.
  • Several times successfully negotiated acquisition of all necessary permits for new facilities, including two hazardous waste recycling facilities and one mixed (hazardous and radioactive) waste recycling facility.
  • Successfully negotiated numerous permit conditions and permit appeals with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and other agencies.
  • Served as lead counsel and chair of the Executive Committee of a 200-member PRP Group at an EPA lead site.
  • Successfully negotiated implementation of a mass loading & trading program among industrial discharges to a POTW in lieu of extensive additional pre-treatment equipment.
  • Twice successfully defended proposed superfund listings by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
  • Successfully lobbied for changes in environmental regulations and legislation, including changes in Tennessee's proposed Title V air permitting program and legislation to exempt a client's mixed waste treatment option from siting requirements.
