Cheek and Jones Named Nashville Lawyers of the Year by Best Lawyers®
Nashville, Tenn., February 17, 2009 – Bass, Berry & Sims Members James H. Cheek, III and Julie N. Jones have been named 2009 Nashville Lawyers of the Year by Best Lawyers®, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. Cheek has been named Nashville Corporate Lawyer of the Year and Jones has been named Nashville Banking Lawyer of the Year in recognition of their distinguished careers.
Jim Cheek represents a number of public and private companies as well as investment banking firms in a wide variety of capital raising and merger and acquisition activities. He also acts as counsel for boards of directors and board committees on matters relating to corporate governance and corporate legal compliance. He graduated from Duke University and Vanderbilt University Law School, and received an LL.M. degree from Harvard University. Cheek has served as chair of the ABA Section of Business Law, the National ABA Task Force on Corporate Responsibility, the Legal Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange, the Legal Advisory Board to the National Association of Securities Dealers, and the Federal Regulation of Securities Committee of the ABA. He is an adjunct professor of law at Vanderbilt University Law School where he teaches a course in securities and corporate law. He has lectured widely at numerous symposiums and institutes, including those sponsored by the SEC, the NYSE, ALI-ABA and PLI.
Julie Jones' practice encompasses general commercial law in a variety of settings, with emphasis on secured financing transactions. She has represented banks in a wide range of fields, including entertainment and intellectual property lending, asset-based loans, service industries and manufacturers lending, and equipment finance, and she has been a lecturer to banking groups and lawyers on those subjects. She earned her law degree at the University of Tennessee, where she was editor-in-chief of the Tennessee Law Review, a member of the Order of the Coif, and Outstanding Graduate of 1977. Ms. Jones is a national panel member of the American Arbitration Association, and is a past director of the Mid-South Commercial Law Institute. She was instrumental in the passage of Uniform Commercial Code Article 2A--Leasing by the Tennessee General Assembly and sat on the State's Legislative Study Committee for that legislation. She served as treasurer of the Tennessee Bar Association, held the Middle Tennessee seat on the association's Board of Governors, and chaired the TBA's Special Legislative Sub-Committee on Tennessee's recording tax statute. She is a fellow of the American, Tennessee and Nashville Bar Foundations and served as the treasurer and a trustee of the Tennessee Bar Foundation. She was a master of the bench in Harry Phillips American Inn of Court and served as counselor of the Inn. For eight years she was a judge on the Tennessee Court of the Judiciary, and she has served three terms as a Hearing Committee Member for the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility.
