Brant Phillips Named TNDP Legal Counsel

Nashville, Tenn., February 7, 2007 - Brant Phillips has been named legal counsel for the Tennessee Democratic Party (TNDP). Chairman Gray Sasser, who held this position for the last four years, appointed Phillips.  Tennessee Attorney General Robert E. (Bob) Cooper, a Bass, Berry & Sims alumnus, served as legal counsel for the TNDP prior to Sasser.  "Brant knows the relevant areas of law as well as anyone in the state," Sasser said.  "As I learned, the job of general counsel to the Party is a big one, and Brant is more than up to the task."

Phillips began his tenure with TNDP on February 1.  A member of the litigation and government relations practice areas in the Nashville office of Bass, Berry, & Sims, Phillips has served as a volunteer lawyer for TNDP during the last four election cycles and as general counsel to state Senator Lowe Finney's successful run for his District 27 seat in 2006.  In addition to general business, products liability and healthcare-related litigation, Phillips' law practice has included regular work in the areas of campaign finance and various administrative and regulatory proceedings.

After graduating magna cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College in 1991, Phillips received his law degree from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va., in 1997, where he also graduated cum laude. He also holds a master's degree in public policy from Duke University.  His work at Duke focused on issues affecting state and local governments.

"I very much appreciate Gray asking me to serve the Party in this capacity," Phillips said.  "I am honored to be a part of his team, and I look forward to contributing to the Party's success in whatever way that I can."
