Bass, Berry & Sims Hosts Salute to African-American Executives
Nashville, Tenn., November 25, 2008 – Bass, Berry & Sims Managing Partner Keith Simmons and Attorney Wendy Warren presented a scholarship donation to Fisk University President Hazel R. O'Leary at the firm’s first annual Salute to African-American Executives on November 12, sponsored by the firm’s African-American Affinity Group.
Held at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the salute was a networking and luncheon program held in honor of African-American executives and influential leaders in Nashville and surrounding communities, with the goal of promoting continued professional success, commitment to community service and a spirit of community among the attendees. Teri Plummer McClure, senior vice president and general counsel for UPS, was the featured speaker.
The $5000 donation establishes two scholarships for Bass, Berry & Sims scholars at Fisk University in recognition of the contributions made by African-American executives and community leaders in Middle Tennessee. Bass, Berry & Sims scholars must possess an interest in attending law school upon graduation and meet certain criteria established jointly by the University and the firm. Successful candidates will receive the award for spring semester 2009. In addition to receiving scholarships, each scholar will participate with Bass, Berry & Sims attorneys in community service initiatives and will shadow legal professionals at the firm.
“We are grateful to Bass, Berry & Sims for the investment in our talented students. As interns and ambassadors for Fisk, our students will receive further preparation toward their academic and career goals as a result of their experiences at Bass, Berry & Sims,” said Fisk University President Hazel R. O’Leary.
